The north smells of tar and salt. Inland, the hills grow soft, the vineyards run to the lake, and no one goes into the forest who hasn't thought about it first.

The Road Finds Them
Aron Halden
Carpenter's son. Burns and cuts close on their own and leave marks; he has plenty of both. Asked about the healing: "It sorts itself." Asked about Devin: "He's my brother." He does not explain further because there is nothing further to explain. He left Halveth because everyone he asked for help said no, and the road east was the last thing left to try.
Devin
Golden hair, bare feet, no spoken language. He gives your words back to you in pieces. He sat down at a potter's wheel in Liret and laughed each time the clay collapsed. A centaur watched him for thirty seconds and said: "My sort of human." Aron has crossed most of Enedal to find someone who can tell him why.
Miv
Two mothers, a grandmother who picks locks on her behalf, and a gift she lost: she used to reach into a creature's mind and feel it reach back. One day it stopped. She told it: "Fine. Stay gone, then." She joined the road east because the alternative was staying home and not knowing.
Lionel Veldren
Old Velorin family. Carries a mirror, ribbons for admirers, and a sword that is "for the very worst moments, and because it is a beautiful accessory." He likes people, being liked, clean linen, and a room improved by laughter. His family's rule: violence is the last tool.
Lionel Veldren dreamt of a catastrophe and set out at once. A fine reason to save the world.
Aron's brother ran into a forest that people do not come back from, and Aron went after him.
Miv lost the magic that let her understand creatures. A centaur pointed her east, beyond the Damaged Lands, for answers.
